US President Donald Trump on Sunday (local time) expressed confidence that a vaccine for coronavirus could be available by the end of the year. “I think we’ll have a vaccine by the end of the year,” Trump said at a Fox News virtual town hall. “We’ll have a vaccine much sooner rather than later.” The number of coronavirus cases in the US has risen to 11,57,687 while the death toll stands at 67,674, according to latest data from Johns Hopkins University.

India on Monday, entered the third phase of its nationwide lockdown which has been furthered by 13 days till May 17 with some relaxations beginning today. India prepared for the third phase of the national lockdown from Monday with “considerable relaxations” in several districts but curbs will continue in containment areas. Health Minister Harsh Vardhan urged people to observe the extended two-week period of lockdown in letter and spirit and treat it as an effective intervention to cut down the chain of transmission of COVID-19.
The death toll due to COVID-19 rose beyond 1,300-mark and the number of cases crossed 40,000-mark in India. The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 28,070, while 10,886 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, the ministry said. The total cases include 111 foreign nationals.

According to the health ministry, as on Friday, there were 130 ‘Red’ zones, maximum of 19 in UP, followed by 14 in Maharashtra. The number of ‘Orange’ Zones was 284 and ‘Green’ was 319. Vardhan said the rate of growth of new COVID-19 cases has been steadying for a while and the recovery rate improving, adding India is on the path of success and will win the war against the pandemic.
