The University Grants Commission on Wednesday said that the new academic session may commence from August 1 for old students and from September 1 for fresh students.
The UGC further announced that exams for terminal semester students will be held in July. “A COVID-19 cell will be constituted in every university which will be empowered to solve the issues of students related to academic calendar and examinations,” it added.
It said that Intermediate Semester students will be graded based on internal examinations of present and previous semesters, adding that in states where situation has normalised, the exams will be held in the month of July.
The internal evaluation can be continuous evaluation, prelims, mid-semester, internal evaluation or whatever name is given for student progression, the UGC said emphasising the guidelines were “advisory” in nature.
“Universities may adopt alternative and simplified modes and methods of examinations to complete the process in shorter period of time. Universities may adopt efficient and innovative modes of examinations by reducing the time from 3 hours to 2 hours,” the higher education sector regulator said.
As per the new guidelines, the universities may conduct the practical examinations and Viva-Voce Examinations through Skype or other meeting apps, and in case of intermediate semesters, the practical examinations may be conducted during the ensuing semesters.
Holding July as a month of vacations, the UGC said that Universities will follow a six-day-week schedule when the next session begins from August.
The UGC has also recommended that Universities may devise a pro forma to record the Travel or Stay history of the staff and students for the period when they were away from the university due to lockdown.
