According to the latest update by the Indian Met Department (IMD) the Cyclone Amphan is less than 100 km south-southeast of Digha in West Bengal, and will cross the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha (west Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sunderbans between 5 to 6 pm. The landfall process of the super cyclonic storm will commence from afternoon (4 pm onwards). The cyclone has also triggered heavy rain and strong wind in parts of Odisha also.
In view of the landfall of the super cyclone, nearly four lakh people have been evacuated from the two affected states. Meanwhile, the Kolkata airport has also suspended all its operations, including the special planes that were deployed to bring back Indians stranded abroad due to Covid-19, till 5 am tomorrow and has issued a red alert in various coastal districts. 41 teams of NDRF have also been deployed in both states, while 20 rescue teams with Gemini boats and medical teams also kept ready for augmenting rescue and relief efforts in Odisha & West Bengal. Naval aircraft also standing by at Naval Air Stations.
