VIJAYAWADA: The rain fury continued in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday with several streams and rivulets overflowing in East and West Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts, leaving several villages cut off from other areas, water inundating roads including a national highway and submerging residential areas at several places.
With rains in the local catchment areas as well as upstream areas, the gates of Yeleru reservoir were lifted to release 17,000 cusecs of water. This left several villages in seven mandals of the district submerged. Water was flowing over the national highway at Gollapudi and Prathipadu disrupting traffic on the busy Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam road.
In other flood-related incidents, the gushing waters from upstream areas washed away a house near a flood canal at Rayavaram in Jaggaiahpet mandal. Luckily, seven employees of a private firm, who were residing there, came out minutes before the house collapsed.
In Visakhapatnam district, the Sarada, Tandava and Varaha rivers are overflowing causing inundation of agricultural fields over hundreds of acres. Two gates of the Tandava reservoir and one gate of the Meghadrigadda reservoir were opened and water released downstream.
